What is Cardano’s Vasil hard fork? (September 2022 update)
Vasil is a hard fork upgrade that aims to accelerate the network, make it more scalable, and decrease transaction fees. It was named after Vasil St Dabov, a beloved Cardano Foundation member and academic who died in 2021.
The Vasil planned hardfork follows 2021’s very important Alonzo upgrade, which brought full smart contract functionality to the ADA blockchain and was a significant step forward for the project. Vasil will launch five important mechanisms, namely CIP-31, CIP-32, CIP-33, CIP-40, and diffusion pipelining.

- CIP-32 will create simpler and quicker communication of datum values between users.
- CIP-33 will enable reference scripts to improve the validation process and reduce transaction size.
- CIP-40 will introduce collateral output transactions, aimed at improving the overall scalability of the network.
- Diffusing pipelining will enable more DApp deployment by overlaying certain steps that a block needs to go through as it moves across the chain, allowing for more concurrent transactions.
Why is the Cardano Vasil hard fork necessary?
The Cardano Vasil upgrade is necessary to improve the performance of the Cardano blockchain. This will enable it to handle more transactions and support a larger user base. How Is Cardano Different From Bitcoin Or Ethereum?

It relies on large numbers of computers competing to solve a complicated puzzle to process “blocks” of transactions on the Ethereum blockchain. These transactions currently can’t be processed in parallel, which means that each block needs to move one at a time.
The result is significant bottlenecks, and users are forced to pay higher fees to get their transactions on the blockchain.
Bottlenecks present a huge problem. If cryptocurrency-based services are too expensive for normal users to access, then the crypto ecosystem will become unsustainable, forcing users to return to traditional services. To help get around this, Cardano uses an algorithm called Ouroboros.
Ouroboros’ Stake Pools
The most important aspect of Ouroboros is its Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus. Instead of miners, Cardano relies on users who have set special nodes, called stake pools, which are responsible for verifying and pushing a collection of transactions to the Cardano blockchain.
A “leader” pool is selected for each slot, based on the amount staked in that pool, and that user receives a reward for their service.
One of the main criteria for the Ouroboros algorithm is the amount of ADA staked in a pool. Thus, users can delegate a portion of their own ADA to a stake pool. If that pool is selected to lead a slot, all users with staked ADA will receive a portion of the reward.
The overall system encourages more users to participate in the staking process, securing the network in the long term.
Cardano is also implementing Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA). This network topology enables custom changes to heterogenous (diverse) networks.
In layman’s terms, RINA has fewer protocols than other topologies but can work faster while still providing transparency, privacy, and scalability.
Another major challenge for cryptocurrency is interoperability. It’s currently difficult for cryptocurrencies to interact across different blockchains and with the wider financial ecosystem.
Although it is possible to conduct cross-chain transactions using smart contracts, they are often costly and slow. They also require users to trade their tokens for a different compatible version — which could lead to a taxable event in certain jurisdictions.
Cardano plans to address interoperability by allowing cross-chain transfers through side chains. Transactions can then occur between two parties off-chain, bypassing the need to process those transactions until they are complete, reducing time and risk.
